Sabine’s series of lake portraits continues! Hiking, biking, exploring amidst the Rieserferner Ahrn Nature Park: learn all about the (secretive) Lake Antholz in the Puster Valley here!

Lake Antholz

Lake Antholz nestles among forests and meadows, surrounded by the magnificent mountains of the Puster Valley. One of the most popular places in the Kronplatz holiday region, it is today the star of my lake portrait! :-)

The origins of a magical place
Mystical stories also surround Lake Antholz. The dark legend of its origins reminds me of the story of Lake Kaltern: a beggar, refused help by the locals, prophesied that springs would devastate their homes. And so it came to pass: the waters dammed up to create today’s Lake Antholz.
The reality was, naturally, rather less dramatic: a landslide blocked the Antholz stream. The lake is magical nonetheless!

The mere thought!

Lake Antholz, South Tyrol’s third largest, lies at the end of the Antholz Valley at 1,642 metres above sea level. Measuring 38 metres at its deepest, it is located in the Rieserferner Ahrn Nature Park. A circular trail (also suitable for prams) runs round it, with information panels describing the local flora, fauna and geology. Several places on the shore offer refreshments – or how about a lakeside picnic? But don’t go for a swim, even in summer... unless you like very cold temperatures! ;-) In winter, however, it is not only ideal for ice skating, but the trail around the lake is also perfect for cross-country skiing!

Lake Antholz is a wonderful place to relax, savour nature – or just be.
