Have you ever thought about a winter holiday in the Upper Vinschgau Valley? As well as the wonderful ski pistes, there is also plenty of tobogganing fun, not to mention the cross-country ski trails or the peaks for ski mountaineers. You can read my personal tips here!

Active holidays in the Upper Vinschgau Valley

Snaking toboggan runs, idyllic winter walks, almost endless cross-country skiing trails, deep-snow routes for winter off-piste adventures – the Upper Vinschgau Valley has something for every winter sports enthusiast. There’s just one thing you won’t find here: the madding crowd. Between the Reschensee Lake and the Ortler, South Tyrol’s highest peak, sunshine will accompany you no matter what activity you choose. Sounds good, doesn’t it? And so it is!
I have previously introduced the classic winter sport options in the Vinschgau Valley here. But there’s plenty more winter magic to enjoy:

Powder power
Climbing the winter mountain peaks, meditating along the way, is possible not only on snowshoes, but also on skis. Glacier or no glacier, you can expect unspoilt natural surroundings and a fast downhill run as a reward. My tip is a summit tour to Piz Sesvenna, an unforgettable adventure. Remaining safe when off the prepared slopes however requires not only the right equipment, but also experience and knowledge of local snow conditions. It’s best to contact the South Tyrolean mountain and ski guides at the local alpine schools and join a guided tour. As they say: better safe than sorry!

Near and far: cross-country ski trails
The Vinschgau Valley has some 100 kilometres of cross-country trails, with plenty of variety. International competitions are even held on the 15-km trail at the Schlinig cross-country ski centre while, at 1,900 metres, the high-altitude cross-country trail in Langtaufers is guaranteed to offer snow. The Dreiländerloipe – the border triangle trail – is also very popular and, at just under 10 kilometres in length, promises international cross-country sport – from South Tyrol into Austria, then all the way into Switzerland.

Tobogganing fun
For a change, how about a toboggan run with the whole family? Or maybe even by moonlight? Whatever you decide, one thing is essential: a convivial break in a mountain hut. The starting point of the Watles toboggan run can also be reached by lift (or on foot, of course, if you prefer a more energetic approach) – then it’s a rapid 4-kilometre run down through the crystal-clear air and snow-covered larch forests, back into the valley. Toboggans can be hired at the top station.

The winter specialists of the Vinschgau Valley have plenty more tips and tour information just waiting for you!

Yours from the heart, Sabine
